Charcoal Making at Harcourt Arboretum

Karl, Guy and Richard have had a very productive and successful start to the year with our charcoal kiln. The kiln was lit on Monday, and yesterday they anxiously lifted the lid. The following pictures say the rest. If you feel inspired by what you see, make sure you book onto our charcoal course Saturday 28th April!

Looks like a success! Have you tried burning it? Will it be economically viable – or is it mainly as a teaching opportunity?

Hi Charles – Good to hear from you, hope you’re well. I managed to cook a leg of goat on my Mexican woodburner in the garden – burnt really hot, cooking the goat in just over half an hour! We were selling our own charcoal at the ticket office last year and will continue to do so this year. We’ll also be selling our own honey and many other locally produced crafts.
